The A.I. Technician’s Toolkit

In the competitive world of Artificial Insemination (A.I.) services in Kenya, your reputation is built on one thing: Results.

When a farmer pays for sexed semen or high-quality Friesian genetics, they expect a pregnancy. If the cow returns to heat 21 days later, they don’t blame the cow—they blame the technician.

While technique (finding the cervix, depositing semen correctly) is vital, your equipment plays a massive role in success or failure. Using worn-out, dirty, or incorrect tools can kill sperm cells before they even enter the cow.

At Medilink Vet Suppliers, we equip Kenya’s top technicians. Here is the essential toolkit you need to maximize conception rates and professionalize your service.

1. The Pistolet (A.I. Gun): Precision Delivery

The A.I. gun is an extension of your hand. If it is bent, rusted, or has a loose plunger, you risk “semen backflow”—where valuable sperm leaks out into the sheath instead of the uterus.

The Medilink Recommendation:

  • Universal Pistolet: This is the most versatile tool. It fits both 0.25ml and 0.5ml straws, so you don’t need to carry two separate guns.
  • Auto-Lock (Ring) Pistolets: These secure the sheath firmly. A slipping sheath can cause injury to the cow’s tract or result in depositing semen in the vagina instead of the uterine body.

Pro Tip: Always warm your gun before loading! A cold stainless steel gun shocks and kills sperm instantly. Rub it vigorously with a paper towel or place it near your body warmth before loading.

2. Thawing Flask & Thermometer: The “35°C Rule”

This is where most mistakes happen. Guessing the water temperature with your finger is a recipe for disaster.

  • Too Hot: You cook the sperm.
  • Too Cold: The sperm suffers “cold shock” and permanent damage.

To achieve high conception rates, you need a Digital Thermometer or an Electronic Thaw Flask. The water must be exactly 35°C to 37°C. Precision here means more live sperm reaching the egg.

3. Tweezers & Straw Cutters: The Hygiene Factor

Did you know that the oil on your fingertips can damage the straw plug? Or that holding a frozen straw with your bare fingers warms it up unevenly?

  • Plastic Tweezers: Use these to lift the straw from the nitrogen tank. Never use your fingers.
  • Straw Cutter: Don’t use your teeth or rusty scissors! A jagged cut prevents a tight seal with the sheath, causing leaks. A proper straw cutter gives a clean 90-degree cut every time.

4. Sheaths (Socks) & Chemise: Infection Control

You can have the best semen in the world, but if you introduce bacteria into the uterus, the cow will develop Metritis and wash out the pregnancy.

  • A.I. Sheaths: Ensure they match your gun type (split or non-split).
  • Sanitary Chemise (Sanitary Sleeve): This is a game-changer. It covers your gun as you pass through the vulva and vagina, protecting the clean tip from contacting manure or bacteria. You only puncture it once you reach the cervix. This simple tool significantly reduces infection rates.

5. Arm-Length Gloves & Lubricant

Farmer perception matters. Using a “shopping bag” or bare hands looks unprofessional and is dangerous for both you and the cow.

  • Quality Arm-Length Gloves: These should be soft but durable (tear-resistant).
  • Non-Spermicidal Lubricant: Never use soap or standard oils! They kill sperm. Use a dedicated veterinary lubricant that is safe for conception.

Summary Checklist: Are You Fully Equipped?
