Permanent and non-permanent identification are the two primary types of identification. Tattooing, ear notches, and microchips are examples of permanent identification. Paint, chalk, and tags are all examples of non-permanent identifying.

Tattooing

When done correctly, tattooing is a permanent way of identifying. It entails puncturing the goat’s skin with needlelike projections. The tattoo ink is pressed into the puncture wounds and remains visible after they heal. To assist avoid the spread of some blood-borne infections, it is a good idea to sanitize the equipment and clean the goat’s ears.

Ear tags

Ear tags are a simple technique to identify each goat in the herd non permanently. They can be read without having to catch the goat, unlike tattoos. They can, however, shatter or be torn out of the goat’s ear, unlike tattoos.

Ear notching

When it comes to identifying goats, ear notching is a standard procedure. It has the advantage of being visible from afar, allowing identification without the need to catch the animal, and it can hold up to 9999 numbers.
